Fairview Park Hospital Gets an "A" on Patient Safety Report Card
June 14, 2012
Dublin, GA – Fairview Park Hospital was honored with an “A” Hospital Safety ScoreSM by The Leapfrog Group (Grading scale from A-F is used; A being the highest and F being the lowest). The annual Leapfrog Hospital Survey is the most robust national measure set comparing hospital safety, quality and efficiency in clinical areas consumers value. Information is collected from more than 2,652 urban and rural hospitals including free-standing pediatric hospitals, throughout the U.S. This allows greater transparency to hospital performance information; allowing consumers the best opportunity to make an educated choice for healthcare.
The survey data focuses on hospital performance in these three key areas:
- How patients fare (i.e., rates of central-line infections, survival predictors, and rates of scheduled early elective newborn deliveries)
- Resources used in caring for those patients (i.e. average length of stay adjusted by readmission for certain conditions and procedures)
- Management practices that promote safety (i.e. safe ICU staffing and safe practices such as hand hygiene and prevention of ventilator associated complications)
“Quality, safety and excellence are all words mentioned in our core values at Fairview Park Hospital,” said Karen Freeman, VP of Administrative Services & Quality at Fairview Park. “This recognition from The Leapfrog Group is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of our staff who are constantly working to represent the standards of our core values provide the highest quality care.”
The Leapfrog Group calculated the safety score under the guidance of the nine-member Leapfrog Blue Ribbon Expert Panel on the Hospital Safety Score. The panel is made up of patient safety experts from across the country, including Harvard’s Lucian Leape, M.D., Michigan’s John Birkmeyer, M.D., and Stanford’s Arnold Milstein, M.D. The panel selected measures to analyze and determined the weights of each measure based on evidence, opportunity for improvement, and impact.
